What's Stopping You?

How does it work?

The human brain is divided into two hemispheres which we call the ‘right brain’ and the left brain’. These two hemispheres are joined by a mass of connecting nerve tissues called neurons which feed information back and forth between the two.

The ‘left brain’ is the conscious mind which is the logical, intellectual side of the brain, responsible for logic and language. It is the ‘left brain’ that you are aware of during your day to take in information, to analyse it and to come to intellectual, logical decisions.

The ‘right brain’ which we call the subconscious mind has many different functions, but has no logic. Firstly, it is the receptacle for all the information passed to it from the ‘left brain’ from day one of your birth onwards. Hence we call this the ‘memory bank’. Not only does it hold all the information passed to it since you were born, but it is responsible for all our habits, behaviours and coping strategies based on everything that has happened to you during your lifetime.

Since this receptacle called the ‘memory bank’ has no logic, it can come up with behaviours, habits and coping strategies that it believes is in your best interest, but may be completely inappropriate and damaging at this time of your life.

Secondly, the ‘right brain’ or subconscious mind is responsible for all the inner workings of your body which happen automatically, such as breathing, heartbeat, production of all your hormones and blood corpuscles and the correct working of all your organs etc. There are millions of things going on in your body without you having to think about them to keep you healthy.

However, the subconscious mind is also the seat of your emotions which is why, when we are going through periods of stress or negative emotions, the inner workings of your body tend to break down and you become ill. This emotional centre engages with not only the inner workings of your body but also the memory bank, which again can make that part come up with bad habits or behaviour that is based on pure emotion and not logic.

Lastly, the ‘right brain’ or subconscious mind is responsible for your imagination, which is a wonderful thing if you use it in a positive way, but bad news if you use it in a negative way. Because the subconscious has no logic it takes on everything you imagine as being real. It simply does not know the difference between imagination and reality. Consequently, you can imagine yourself into failure, anxiety and illness.

However, because the subconscious takes on everything we imagine to be real, we can use this to our advantage and ply the subconscious with imagined positive responses to situations which it will take on as if those responses had actually happened, for positive change.

Now imagine how hugely powerful it would be if we had access to the subconscious mind. We would have access to the memory bank which holds our behaviours, habits and coping strategies, the inner workings of our body, our emotions and our imagination.

Well, the great news is that we can have access, through the power of hypnosis. Because what happens during the process of hypnosis is that the ‘left brain’, the conscious, logical side of the brain, takes a backward seat. When this happens the subconscious mind comes forward for your safety and takes over, becoming accessible to us both.

The subconscious mind always comes forward and takes over from the logical side of the brain when the logical side is asleep or in a daydream state. It happens completely automatically. For example, when you are driving or on a journey you do often, you sometimes through boredom or familiarity, drift off into a daydream state, thinking about a problem at work, or your next holiday, or what you are going to have for dinner etc. The subconscious then comes forward and takes over automatically for your protection to ensure you drive safely. This is exactly what happens in hypnosis – I relax you into a daydream state, allowing the subconscious to come forward so we can gain the access we need and want.

An important part of the therapy is to listen to the CD daily which I will prepare for you. In this way you are getting therapy daily in between our sessions. Whilst playing the CD it is important that you allow your logical/conscious mind to daydream. Having listened to the CD a few times you will, through boredom, naturally drift off into a daydream state and that is absolutely perfect, for then your subconscious can come forward so that we can make the changes you want.

I will tell you exactly how I will bring about the state of hypnosis before your first session so that you can feel completely comfortable and at ease about the process before we start.
